Pranayama Intensive Course

Pranayama is a fundamental practice in classical yoga for calming, strengthening, and focusing the nervous system in preparation for meditative practices.

Over the weekend, Eddie will offer an 8 hour pranayama intensive course, with the opportunity to understand the fundamentals of pranayama practice and learn sequences to integrate into daily yoga routines.

It has been said that when we glimpse our inner essence, the power of that realisation can be so profound that the vessel of our body needs to be strong and stable enough to contain the increased flow of energy that comes along with the new revelations about who we are. While asanas give stability to our bodies, they only have a limited impact on the deeper functions of our nervous system, specifically the operations of the autonomic nervous system. When we can begin to have a measure of control over the automatic functions of our body, such as breathing, we can begin to manage our subconscious impulses, thought patterns, and unconscious behaviors.

In this eight hour course, you will learn two primary schools of pranayama. The first is the Hatha Yoga school, which uses breath retention, and the second is the Vasishta school, which moves towards natural or spontaneous pausing of the breath, rather than measured holds. Both have benefits and are useful for yoga practitioners. We will also cover teachings from a variety of Hatha Yoga texts; learn about the scientific research currently done on pranayama and slow breathing; and practice simple asanas that open the lung channels and prepare for pranayama. When approached slowly and sensibly, pranayama is a safe and important practice to include as part of your spiritual practice for regular use. You will leave this training with pranayama plans you can use for daily practice. With this course you will also receive Eddie’s slides and Yoga Education Collective material. www.yogaeducationcollective.com

Yoga and Strength

Created by Eddie, this class is a fusion of traditional Indic physical exercises and Western body-weight practices. It uniquely combines strength-building movements with slow, intentional breathing to help you feel energized, balanced, and focused. The class includes full-body strengthening exercises designed to build both strength and endurance. By regularly attending this class, you will definitely see improvements of strength, coordination, endurance, and confidence in your physical and mental capacities/states of being. Eddie offers this class online and at Broome Street Temple weekly!

Yoga Sangraha

Yoga Sangraha is not a new type of Yoga, but a celebration and practice of classical Yoga practices using a contemporary approach, with science and tradition as a sourcebook.

This dynamic, open-level class combines kriyas and pranayama that are aimed at expanding lung capacity and building cardiovascular strength, along with different types of Sun Salutations, and classical yoga postures. The sequencing of the postures follows the signaling patterns of the nervous system. We group postures together that are calming, integrating, energizing, and grounding in such a way that you are left with a deep sense of calm and inwardly focus.

Sangraha means “a collection” or “compendium.” The practices come from the larger Hatha Yoga tradition, and not from any one lineage. These sequences have been put together by Eddie, drawing from experimentation, study, and exploration of classical Hatha Yoga practices and texts.

This is a meditation from the Yoga Sutras on the transcendental consciousness in the heart called Purusha. We will recite the six sutras describing Ishvara, along with the translated meaning, and then together recite the sound of Om twenty-one times. The sound of Om is described as the verbalization of Ishvara, who is beyond time and space, and therefore can only be described in abstract form. This is a deeply peaceful and meditative practice.

Lecture or OM Chanting and the Ishvara Pranidhana Sutras
